November 2014

This term we have been learning our times tables, especially our 3s and 4s.  Our new topic is ‘Eat Up’ and we have been learning about how the body digests food.  In the playground we all joined together to pretend we were a piece of meat.  Then we were swallowed by a giant who digested us in his mouth, then his stomach and finally his small intestine.  On the way we began to split up and the nutrients were carried into the blood vessels and travelled around the body.   In Computing we have been solving problems and have become bug fixers.  In Geography we have been learning about where the cities, mountains and rivers are in the United Kingdom.  Birch Class have been busy writing some instructions and poems this term.  We have really enjoyed reading and watching Michael Rosen’s poems especially ‘Chocolate Cake’.  We wrote poems about animals and we wrote a class rhyming poem but it wasn’t quite as funny as Michael Rosen’s ones.  We have been trying to learn how to tell the time; sometimes we have tried to do this in Roman Numerals!  In Art we have painted some pictures about an autumn path.

October 2014

Our topic is ‘Yabba Dabba Doo!’, which is about the Stone Age and Iron Age.  We have been learning about history and have made a Toilet Paper Timeline.  The Stone Age was 78 sheets ago (1 sheet equals 100 years) and the dinosaurs became extinct 2,166 rolls ago.  In Computing we have been learning how to program in Scratch and have made some animations.  We have been learning about volcanoes in Science.  We have researched why they erupt and how hot they are.  We have also learnt that the centre of the earth is 60 times hotter than boiling water.  In Maths we have been learning about 2D shapes and 3D shapes.  A 19 faced 3D shape is a nonadecahedron.  In Art we created caves and drew on the ceiling (it was really the underside of our desks!).  For English we are writing a story and it is based on ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’.  In all our learning we are trying to show a Growth Mindset.

Summer - Week 8

This term we had a trip to Cuffley Camp.  The first thing we did was the green man mask. We had a piece of paper each and a crayon. We put our paper on the bark and rubbed with the crayon and stuck leaves on. Our next task was to build a den out of trees. It had to be water proof and stable before we could go inside it. Our 3rd task was the up and down challenge or you can call it under and over.  We had a great day and got very muddy.  Our topic this term is the World Cup and we are having a tournament with Year 4.  We are using the numbers from the World Cup in our Maths and writing World Cup poems in Literacy.
